Choosing the Right DVD Guitar Lessons

play guitar When I started learning the guitar over twenty years ago, my only choice was a private instructor. Times have changed drastically since that time. One modern option is guitar lessons on DVD. Learning guitar from a DVD based program has advantages that cannot be denied. So here, we will look at those advantages.

The truth is that many guitar lessons on DVD you may come across are not the quality you need. The DVD you decide on has to be professional quality and recorded well. The video has to be easy to see and decipher. The sound quality needs to be equally as good since you will be relying on your eyes and ears to learn the lessons.

Make sure the guitar course is taught by someone with actual teaching experience. This is easier than it sounds, folks. All you need to do is find out who the teacher on the DVD is and Google them. All the information you want to know will be returned in a few seconds. Read, review and make sure the teacher is really a teacher and not just a player who is trying to make extra money.

Next, do a little research on the DVD you are considering. Be absolutely certain that it is a true beginner’s program. Many times, you may buy one of these DVDs and discover that much of the basic stuff is omitted. Things like proper position, picking techniques, parts of the guitar, reading music and tablature should be included. Without this information under your belt, you may find your lessons to be in vain.

Then, take into consideration the type of music you want to play. Search out guitar lessons on DVD that focus on that genre. There are comprehensive lesson programs available that cover several music genres and styles, but they are not a centered study on a specific genre. If you want to learn blues, then look for a guitar lesson that is blues centric. If you like rock, find a rock DVD lesson set.

What I am about to suggest is not an absolute necessity, but it is strongly recommended. The guitar lessons on DVD may have play-along tracks. What this does is allow you to lay that lesson as a duet with the teacher or other professional players. As well as providing a fun way to practice the lessons, it also gives you playing experience with other players. Some of these tracks may even be a complete band backing you up!

So in general, a good DVD guitar lesson should take you from the very beginning, like holding the pick, all the way through to tuning the guitar and playing your first song. Compared to taking lessons from a personal instructor, using the kind of guitar learning program has two absolute advantages for you; 1) the cost is MUCH lower, and 2) the time is yours to practice as you wish.

With the guitar lessons on DVD, you can replay it over and over until you get the lesson down and right. With personal lessons each week, you are under pressure to get the material perfect in only a few days. Plus, you will make mistakes as you learn, so feel free to learn from those mistakes and practice until you feel comfortable moving on.

The maker of Dvd Guitar Lessons should be an expert in his field. He should clearly have experience enough to teach. In addition, he should have references or the ability to prove that expertise. The creator of The Best DVD Guitar Lessons for beginner and intermediate is Steve Krenz. From the information found about Mr. Krenz, his credentials include a music degree and professional gigs that has taken his worldwide. He has also taught students from all around the world how to play the guitar. It is clear that he has experience teaching so lets take a look at the course itself.

Dvd Guitar Lessons should be user-friendly and not assume that the viewer knows something. There should be a small portion in the beginning that reviews terms to make sure the viewing audience can follow, easily, the instructions.  It wasn’t difficult to find reviews with people praising this DVD.

They talk about how Mr. Krenz has thought of each possible student. A child as young as eight can follow along and the intermediate player is not insulted with childish instructions. Apparently what he has done is made it simple, and clear to follow for the beginner at the same time challenging the advanced student. So that is a plus for this DVD. The next factor that must be addressed is cost. Getting your money’s worth is essential to most. The search for what comes in the package turned up a lot and many felt that the course was worth the cost.

With the good comes the not so good news. That is just human nature, right? Well, there were dislikes about the course that must be noted. A cosmetic complaint was found to say that the lesson book that comes with DVD course didn’t stay open or lay flat on the table. This is a small complaint but a valid one. Perhaps for his revised DVD lesson, Mr Krenz will use a spiral binding to address this concern.

Another dissatisfaction with The Best DVD Guitar Lessons for beginner and intermediate, is that it doesn’t give more of a specific genre. It is a broad lesson plan, that allows the student to experiment with many different styles of music. Some may be able to overlook these small flaws and associate them with personal preferences. But they are still worth noting.

What Makes DVD Guitar Lessons So Good?

I like to learn to play guitar by using DVD guitar lessons, Why? Well for me it is the ability to watch intricate finger movements up close with a crystal clear screen. I can watch the instructor play a riff and then I have the ability to rewind the DVD and watch it again and again – in fact I can watch the same scene over and over again as many times as I need to be able to take it in and repeat what I am seeing. Being able to do this will help super boost your learning process so that you will be able to pick up things a lot faster and so that you will be able to reach your overall goal a lot quicker.

One of the other major benefits of using DVD guitar lessons is that I can put in the DVD and then skip to any place that I want – want to learn different songs, with a press of the button I am there. Or how about wanting to learn new finger techniques? Another push of the button (skipping through the menu) and I am right where I want to be.

I also know that with DVD guitar lessons that the instructor is not going to change what they say – so if I skipped something that I previously watched I can easily go back and watch it again without any fuss. Try doing this with a normal instructor and they first need to remember what it was that they were talking about and then when they repeat it, you will find that they say something different even though the point they are trying to get across is the same. This often gave me big headaches.

You can pull out a DVD at anytime to watch it and learn, let’s see you pull out an instructor at 11pm at night when you feel like a bit more instruction or taking an instructor off the shelf when you feel like brushing up on your technique before going to your first big gig.

If you have not yet tried DVD guitar lessons, I would suggest that you check one out and give it a try – you will not be disappointed.
